The association between Universities and Freemasonry can trace its origins back to The Apollo University Lodge No.357 attached to Oxford University which held its first meeting in 1819. The Isaac Newton University Lodge associated with Cambridge was formed in 1861.

Latterly, during 2005 the United Grand Lodge Universities scheme was set up ‘To establish and/or enhance arrangements and opportunities for undergraduates and other university members to enjoy Freemasonry’. This scheme opens access to Freemasonry for alumni, staff and students of Higher Education. There are now some 73 University scheme lodges.

Please note that St David's is a “University Scheme Lodge” rather than a “University Lodge” and there are no formal associations with Bangor University.
